Betsy DeVos: A Better Future in Education

What were some of the first thought that you had about the new Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos? For many, they were relatively unfamiliar with her work or who she was. She had done a lot of work in her home state of Michigan, but she failed to make a large national impression. The national impression that she did have was that of a kook dedicated to the school choice movement. Now, in later years the concept of school choice has taken a stronger role in the community. People are understanding the value and individuals like Betsy DeVos to had received negative feedback on their opinions before are being hailed as early heroes for the movement. Betsy DeVos interviewed with Philanthropy Roundtable to discuss some of the growth options that are continuing to expand in the United States and where it might go in the future.

Philanthropy Roundtable wanted to know how she felt about the movement at this time. Betsy DeVos states that she is very encouraged about the trajectory of the movement and where parents are today, compared to how they were a few years ago. In fact, she excitedly claims that the growth of students entering new school choice programs has increased by 40,000 within just the past year. This is an encouraging number and shows just how many parents are interested in enrolling their children in alternative education options. These programs exist all over the nation and seem to be growing in popularity. There are already 33 different programs in multiple states that are benefiting from the public funding initiatives that have sprung up in an effort to support the growth of these programs. Because they are benefiting from some type of public funding there able to accept more students into their programs and therefore continue helping the local community.

Betsy DeVos is not coming out and saying that she openly wishes to destroy the public-school system, she simply believes that in order for there to be any type of lasting change the system needs to be pushed or challenged. These new types of education will allow administrators to see alternative ways of doing the education process. In fact, the act of competition often inspires individuals to do more research and learn new methods to help her affect the process. It appears as though the education system itself has stagnated significantly in recent years with no new developments. There is even a running joke that many of the books that are present in the public-school system are not even up to date and children are only learning parts of history that are pertinent to those times or taught the updated history on the fly. Students should not be subjected to this type of environment, nor should teachers feel as though they are being forced to give students a very low degree of education. The learning environment should be one that is a rich tapestry of diversity, education materials, different types of modes of education, and supportive staff. Betsy DeVos supports this type of future.
